    Whananaki New Zealand

    Whananaki is a quite coastal community located right on the shores of a beautiful little harbor and can be accessed from Whananaki North Road around forty five minutes north of  Whangarei in the Northland region.

    Whananaki is divided into Whananaki North and Whananaki South which is joined by the longest foot bridge in the Southern Hemisphere spanning the bottom end of Whananaki Harbor, the bridge was built in 1947 to allow school children living in Whananaki South to attend school in Whananaki North the bridge spans an impressive 395 meters.

    From Whananaki North Road the Northern side of the harbor is accessable by vehicle and the Southern side is accessable by crossing the foot bridge or returning a few kms back down the road and crossing over a steep and winding saddle on the Whananaki South road, this road is not suitable for caravans or motor homes the road is extremly narrow and graveled.

    Watkin Powell Track

    North just past Whananaki Harbor and up and over a hill you can access Otamure Bay here there is a fantastic swimming beach with white sand and also a camping area right on the beach, at the Northern end of the beach is the Watkin Powell Track and reserve this track takes you up the hillside and down to Tauwhara Bay a beautiful secluded beach ideal for swimming.

    Motutara Recreation Reserve

    Located on the Northern side of the harbor is the Motutara Recreation Reserve and associated Motutara Farm which has a fantastic camping ground and is sign posted on Rockell Bay Road, the walk takes you through farmland and out to the headland and Motutara Point with stunning views out across the ocean and down the Whananaki Harbor. 

    Whananaki Coastal Walkway

    Located on the Southern side of Whananaki Harbor is a beautiful white sand beach you can walk along the beach to the harbor entrance and to the south is the Whananaki Coastal Walkway, the walk way starts just north of Matapouri Bay on Mcauslin Road and follows farmland for most of the way with fantastic views over the ocean the walk takes around three hours one way and ends at Whananaki South.
