    Coromandel Peninsula

    Fantail Bay

This camping spot is one of our favorites located on the western side of the coromandel  peninsula while not a large camp ground the place is just over the road from the ocean with awsome views out across the Hauraki Gulf, there is not really a beach here as it is all pebbles, but the area is a good picnic spot.

The off season there is always a camp spot here but during the holidays it is a different story, the place can get full in a short time, also there is no freedom camping any where on the peninsula and no dogs allowed as well.

The camp ground has basic amenities like toilets etc, and you can use tents or campers the area is not suited to large caravans as the road is narrow and rough, the nearest shop is back at Colville around thirty minutes drive away so you need to bring in supplies like water etc.

    Port Jackson

Port Jackson is located at the most northerly point on the Coromandel Peninsula the area is popular for fishing both from the rocks and from boats that can be launched from the beautiful sandy beach. You can access Port Jackson from the western side of the peninsula by following the coastline, you can also get access from the eastern side by crossing over the peninsula.

There is a great camping ground located at Port Jackson this camp is past Fantail Bay a few kms and on DOC land so you cannot take any animals dogs or cats as this is a reserve for endangered wildlife.

The port Jackson camp offers endless views out across the gulf to Great Barrier Island and is alot larger than Fantail Bay so can accommodate a larger crowd during the holiday season as with the other camp grounds around here there is always room in the off season.

There are alot of activities for the whole family to enjoy at Port Jackson, you can fish off the sandy beach right in front of the camp, or go for a walk to the headland at both ends of the beach this area is a great place to explore and a great place for a relaxing holiday, there are no shops out at the end of the peninsula you need to bring all supplies with you the nearest shop is back at Colville down the coast.

    From Address:

    Fletcher Bay

This is the end of the road, literally as the peninsula road goes no further than Fletchers bay this camp ground is a bit more prepared than the others as there is a backpackers located here with limited food and beverages forsale.

This camp ground like the others has uninterrupted views out across the gulf to great barrier island and directly out off the beach is Square Top Island which is a fantastic place to fish if you have a kayack, to the right is the pinnacles which stick out from the mainland this whole area is worth looking around there are tracks dotted all through here and you can walk to stoney bay around the corner.
