    Waipu Caves are located south of Whangarei city in Northland and consist of three main chambers the caves were eroded by water over a long time period and consist of Limestone formations, the entrance to the caves is wide and plenty of head room is available so entering the cave system is easy, inside the first chamber there are stunning stalactites and stalagmites.

    Once your eyes have adjusted to the darkness an entire new world is visable, there are fossils and animal bones to found through out the cave system particually when there has been flooding as they get washed out through the cave, some of the rock formations are stunning where they have been eroded by the water

    The inside of the cave system is totaly dark so be sure to take head mounted lights as well as hand held lights and a fresh set of batteries, the floor of the cave is a running stream and you need to clamber over slippery clay banks and wade through the shallow water, depending on how much it has been raining this could be waist deep in some places the further you go into the cave.

    The inner chambers are only suitable for experienced cavers as climbing through a cave system with running water can have some hidden dangers, there are no guided tours through the caves and you enter at your own risk you need to look at the weather a few days before venturing into the cave system as the chambers can fill with water very rapidly, the final chamber is home to a community of glow worms lighting up the chambers ceiling with lots of tiny lights. 

    For family members that do not wish to go deep inside the cave system there is a great short walk to a look out point that over looks the farm land with glimpses of Whangarei heads and the harbor in the distance, the first 500 metres are through a fantastic rocky landscape with large rock stacks and formations dotted through the trees, the walk is around 2kms in length an once through the trees and rocks there are some steep sections up clay tracks with muddy downhills and through some fantastic native bush before opening up on the high country farmland.
