Explore The Many Fantastic Walking Tracks Available Through Out New Zealand Including The Nine Great Walks.

    Over the mountain Maungatautari Peak

This Bush walk is in the Maungatautari wildlife sanctuary in the Waikato region, access is off Arapuni Road and turn right into Tari Road and drive to the end. you can also acces from Hicks road on the northen side of the mountain as well.

The over the mountain track is free to walk but the other tracks through the sanctuary there is a small fee, the track starts off at a pest proof enclosure you walk through two gates and onto a gravel road which runs for a km or so untill you see the track on your left hand side.

The grade at the start is moderate and the track has a gravel surface so is walkable in the wet as well as the dry, as you proceed the grade gets steep in places even more so as you approach the summit there are diversions onto the old over the mountain tracks all along the walk, however these are over grown with bush and not as easy to walk so pays to stay on the new track.

We only walked to the summit and did not procced down the other side as we were filming as we were walking, the walk from Tari road on the southern side to Hicks road on the northen side is around 5hrs one way depending on your fitness level and also the weather conditions.

The walk would not be much fun in the heavy rain so pick your time to do this walk, over all the walk was moderate to hard in places there is allsorts of native plants and bird life to view along the way. We will also walk the sanctuary track at some stage in the future as well.
