Explore Some Of New Zealand's Most beautiful Waterfalls From The North Island And The South Island Of New Zealand

    Pukenui Waterfall

The AH Reed Memorial Park is located in the Northland City of Whangarei New Zealand, the park gets the name from a famous New Zealand historian and author who fought hard to save the area and the waterfall from becoming a quarry as the area is rich in rock deposits which can be seen walking around the various tracks in the area.

The AH Reed Memorial Park can be accessed from two locations, the first is by foot only from the more well known Whangarei Waterfall by following the Hatea River along the Hatea Track for around thirty minutes or by vehicle access from Whareora Road where there is a public carpark, the carpark also allows an overnight stay in a self contained camper.

From the Whareora RD access there is a loop walk, to the left the Elizabeth Track will take you to the Hatea River where there is the option to walk to the Whangarei Falls or turn right as you reach the riverside and head up a short hill to the Forest Canopy Walk and the Pukenui Waterfall.

From the Carpark turning right onto the Alexander Track this will also take you to the Canopy Walk and the Pukenui Waterfall, the canopy walkway is a boardwalk over the Wai Koromiko Stream with a fantastic view down into the valley below, there are some impressive Kauri trees to be seen here and the walkway takes you right through the Kauri canopy with other mature native trees in the mix as well.

Crossing over the canopy walkway to the other side there is a junction, to the left will take you back down the hill side through some regenerating Kauri and onto the Hatea River Track where you can walk on to the Whangarei Waterfalls or return to the carpark via the Elizabeth Track.

The right hand side of the junction will take you to the Pukenui Waterfall, descending down into the valley you will arrive at the first set of steps here there are two options, following the steps up the hill side will take you to the lookout at the top of Pukenui Waterfall.

To the right of the first set of steps before you start up the hill side there is an unmarked and hard to find track that will take you along the Wai Koromiko Stream to the base of the Waterfall this route is better for photos as you can see the entire hight of the Pukenui Waterfall.

The AH Reed Memorial Park is a great place for the whole family to enjoy and only around twenty minutes from Whangarei, the Pukenui Waterfall and canopy loop takes around one hour to complete and if you still need more you can walk to the Whangarei Waterfall and return back down the Hatea Track to the carpark, the walk is moderate and the track is well maintained, the Pukenui Waterfall is a Horsetail Waterfall with a height of 24 metres.
